#What is Profound AI?

Profound is an Answer Engine Optimization platform that monitors brand visibility in AI search and ships an Agents content-generation product alongside it. Coverage ranges from ChatGPT only at the Starter tier ($99 per month) to up to ten engines at Enterprise — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI, DeepSeek, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode[5]. The product taxonomy spans Answer Engine Insights (brand-representation tracking), Profound Agents (autonomous workers for content generation), Prompt Volumes (demand intelligence on what users are prompting), Agent Analytics (AI-crawler attribution tracking), and Shopping (ChatGPT product-listing surface).

It is built by Profound (tryprofound.com) in San Francisco, founded in 2024 by CEO James Cadwallader and Dylan Babbs. Named customers include Ramp, DocuSign, Figma, Target, Walmart, MongoDB, Charlotte Tilbury, US Bank, and Gamma, with 700+ enterprise customers and approximately ten percent of the Fortune 500 disclosed in the February 2026 Series C announcement[2]. The funding history matches the ambition: $155 million raised across seed through Series C, with the $96 million Series C closing at a $1 billion valuation in February 2026, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners with continued backing from Sequoia, Kleiner Perkins, Saga, and South Park Commons.

Verdict

gtmcanon recommends Profound for marketing teams already on ChatGPT-only monitoring at small scale (Starter, $99), for growing teams that want bundled Agents content generation alongside three-engine tracking (Growth, $399), and for enterprises that need up to ten engines, SOC 2, SSO, and API access (Enterprise, custom). It is not the cheapest tracker; Peec AI offers more model variety at the entry tier for less spend. Profound earns the premium when the buyer values the Agents content product, the AI-crawler analytics, or the engine count.

Bottom line

The category leader by funding and ambition, with a tier structure that competes at SMB ($99 Starter) and pulls away on capability above that. Pick Profound for the Agents product, the crawler analytics, or the ten-engine Enterprise coverage. Pick a tracker-only competitor if those three things are not your reasons.

#Evidence and analysis

Three threads run through this review: pricing — and what pricing tells you about the buyer Profound is built for; the structural question of platform-vs-channel that Profound's product roadmap is now answering; and the realistic fit-for-purpose math, especially for agencies. James Cadwallader, the founder, framed the bet in the Fortune coverage of the Series C round.

In the future, every company on the planet will care deeply about how AI talks about and surfaces — and at some point interacts with — their brand.
Allie Garfinkle · Fortune · 2026-02-24 [1]

That sentence is the company's thesis condensed: Profound exists because Cadwallader believes every brand will eventually need a system of record for how it appears in AI. The $1 billion valuation is investors agreeing with him.

#Pricing

Profound publishes three tiers, verified against the live pricing page on 2026-05-22[3]. Starter is $99 per month for one seat, fifty unique prompts, 1,500 monthly responses, daily tracking, and ChatGPT only. Growth is $399 per month for three seats, one hundred unique prompts, 9,000 monthly responses, three engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews), four opportunities per week, 400 Agents credits, and six optimized articles per month. Enterprise is custom-quoted: up to ten engines, multiple companies, dedicated Slack with SLA, SSO/SAML, SOC 2 compliance, API access, and ChatGPT Shopping.

Pricing verified directly against the live Profound pricing page on 2026-05-22[3]. Enterprise pricing is not published; the figure is a custom quote via sales. Profound also publishes a separate “For agencies” pricing view that this review does not cover; full agency-fit analysis will land with the next revision.

Two things stand out at the tier level.

The first is that Starter is not a marketing anchor. It is a real $99 monthly product that ships ChatGPT-only monitoring at fifty unique prompts. For a brand whose AI search exposure is genuinely concentrated on ChatGPT, that is a workable entry point and competitive with Peec AI Starter at €85. The model trade-off, however, is real: Peec lets the same buyer pick any three of seven engines for the same money. Profound Starter is the cheapest ChatGPT-only monitor in the segment; Peec Starter is the more flexible product.

The second is that the price-per-engine jump from Starter to Growth is large. Moving from one engine to three engines costs $300 more per month — but the buyer also picks up the Agents content-generation product (400 credits, six articles per month), the four-opportunities-per-week feed, Agent Analytics for AI-crawler attribution, and an opportunities surface. Buyers who want only the additional two engines are overpaying. Buyers who want the Agents product bundled with three-engine tracking are roughly at par with what an independent content-marketing tool plus a tracker would cost together.

#Structural questions

Two structural questions sit underneath the pricing.

First: is Profound a platform or a channel-monitoring tool? The product roadmap says platform. Beyond Answer Engine Insights (the original monitoring layer), Profound now ships Agents (autonomous AI-content workers that publish to a CMS), Prompt Volumes (demand intelligence on what prompts are being run against AI engines), Agent Analytics (AI-crawler attribution tracking), and Shopping (ChatGPT product-listing surface). Cadwallader framed the bet in Fortune's Series C coverage.

In the future, every company on the planet will care deeply about how AI talks about and surfaces — and at some point interacts with — their brand.
Allie Garfinkle · Fortune · 2026-02-24 [1]

That is the language of a horizontal platform, not a vertical monitor. For a buyer, the question is whether they want to commit to Profound owning the whole AEO platform surface — tracking, content generation, attribution — or commit only to the monitoring layer where the company started. The pricing structure reinforces the platform framing: Starter is tracking-only, but Growth onwards bundles Agents, and the Growth-to-Enterprise capability gradient is content production, attribution depth, and engine breadth — not just more tracking.

Second: the agency math. Profound is the right pick for agencies billing AEO as a discrete deliverable. It is the wrong pick for agencies stretching AEO across a smaller client book at the entry tier alone.

Profound is the right pick when AEO tracking is itself a billable client deliverable. Below five clients with explicit AEO deliverables, Profound's per-client allocated cost gets uncomfortable fast.
Vasco Monteiro · Arvow · 2026-05-15 [4]

Vasco Monteiro, writing in Arvow's May 2026 review, named the threshold at five clients with explicit AEO deliverables. That observation was made against an earlier Profound pricing structure; the underlying point survives at current pricing too. Below five AEO retainers, the per-client allocated cost of even Growth ($399 per agency seat-cluster) needs the Agents content product to be valuable. If the agency wants tracking-only at multiple-client scale, a tracker-only competitor at lower per-client cost is cleaner.

Profound also publishes a separate agency pricing model, distinct from the brand tiers covered above.

Agency pricing

Profound ships a separate agency pricing model with a low entry-tier wrapper price and per-client workspace add-ons. Verified against the agency view on the live pricing page on 2026-05-22[3].

TierPriceIncludedAdd-ons / notes
Agency Growth$99 + add-ons/mo10 pitch workspaces/mo (25 prompts each, 7-day duration)+1 Client Workspace $399/mo · +5 Trial Workspaces $199/mo · 5 agency seats · Agency mode · consolidated billing · email support
Agency EnterpriseCustom/moTailored client + trial workspacesCustom · Dedicated agency partner · premium Slack · SSO · API · dedicated specialist 24h SLA

The Agency Growth wrapper at $99 monthly is a pitch-and-billing layer, not a tracking layer. Real client work happens through the Client Workspace add-on at $399 per workspace per month. Trial Workspaces are $199 for five. An agency managing five clients on Profound is paying $99 + 5 × $399 ≈ $2,094 per month. Same agency on Peec Scale at €675 monthly serves up to seven clients at flat pricing — about a 3× spread in agency-management economics, materially in favor of Peec at multi-client scale.

Do not buy this tool if…

  1. you need engine coverage beyond ChatGPT and you are spending at the entry tier.

Profound Starter is $99 per month but covers ChatGPT only. Three-engine coverage (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) requires the Growth tier at $399 per month — a 4x jump. Peec AI Starter at €85 includes any three of seven engines for the same money.

    See source [3] →

  2. you only want tracking and do not value the bundled Agents content product.

Profound Growth at $399 monthly bundles a content-generation product (Agents, 400 credits, 6 optimized articles per month) and AI-crawler analytics alongside the three-engine tracking. If those bundled features are not on your buying criteria, a tracker-only competitor at Pro-tier pricing is meaningfully cheaper.

    See source [3] →

  3. you need Enterprise capabilities (10 engines, SSO, SOC 2, API) but cannot run a sales-gated procurement.

Up to ten engines, SSO/SAML, SOC 2 compliance, ChatGPT Shopping, and API access all sit only at the Enterprise tier, which is custom-quoted via sales. Starter and Growth are self-serve, but feature parity with mid-market enterprise tooling needs the Enterprise tier.

Frequently asked questions

What is Profound AI?

Profound is an Answer Engine Optimization platform that monitors brand visibility in AI search and ships an Agents content-generation product alongside it. The tracking surface ranges from ChatGPT only at the Starter tier to up to ten engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI, DeepSeek, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode) at Enterprise. It is built by Profound (tryprofound.com) in San Francisco, founded 2024 by James Cadwallader (CEO) and Dylan Babbs.

How much does Profound AI cost?

Profound has three published tiers verified on the vendor pricing page on 2026-05-22: Starter at $99 per month (50 unique prompts, 1,500 monthly responses, ChatGPT only, one seat, 100 Agents credits), Growth at $399 per month (100 prompts, 9,000 responses, three engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — three seats, 400 Agents credits, 6 optimized articles per month, 4 opportunities per week), and Enterprise as a custom quote (up to ten engines, multiple companies, dedicated Slack, SSO/SAML, SOC 2 compliance, API access, ChatGPT Shopping). Starter and Growth are self-serve; Enterprise is sales-gated.

Is Profound AI worth it?

Profound is worth it for buyers who value at least one of three things beyond raw tracking: the bundled Agents content-generation product (Growth and Enterprise), the AI-crawler analytics, or coverage of up to ten engines including Claude (Enterprise). Buyers who want only tracking and do not need those bundled features can get more engine variety per dollar from Peec AI at every comparable tier.

What is the difference between Profound and Peec AI?

Both compete at SMB pricing now: Profound Starter is $99 monthly, Peec Starter is €85 monthly. At Starter, Peec gives a buyer any three of seven engines while Profound gives ChatGPT only — Peec wins on raw model variety at entry. At the mid-tier, Profound Growth ($399) bundles Agents content generation and AI-crawler analytics that Peec Pro (€205) does not ship. At Enterprise, both go custom; Profound markets up to ten engines, Peec markets all models including Claude Sonnet 4 and GPT-5 Search. Buyers choose between them by capability mix, not by tier-band.

Who are Profound's customers?

Profound disclosed 700+ enterprise customers and approximately ten percent of the Fortune 500 in its February 2026 Series C announcement. Named customers include Ramp, DocuSign, Figma, Target, Walmart, MongoDB, Charlotte Tilbury, US Bank, and Gamma.

How is Profound funded?

Profound has raised $155 million total. The funding timeline runs $3.5M seed (August 2024, South Park Commons), $20M Series A (Kleiner Perkins), $35M Series B (Sequoia Capital), and a $96M Series C at $1 billion valuation (February 2026, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners).

What are the best Profound alternatives?

The closest substitute is Peec AI (Starter €85 monthly, more engine variety at the entry tier). Adjacent alternatives include AthenaHQ (smaller-team focus), Scrunch AI (Y Combinator-backed mid-market), and Otterly (European, SMB-tier). Ahrefs Brand Radar sits adjacent as a research engine rather than a tracker.

#Methodology

Five sources were cited across this review, drawn from two independent voices and three primary vendor sources. The independent voices are Allie Garfinkle (Fortune, Series C coverage with founder quotes) and Vasco Monteiro (Arvow, agency-fit analysis with a five-client threshold). The vendor sources are Profound's Series C announcement blog, the live pricing page, and the homepage product taxonomy.

The first published version of this review (2026-05-22) cited Rankability and Arvow as the primary pricing sources, both of which described Profound's entry tier as "Lite at $499 per month" against pricing data that was stale by the time this review went out. The live vendor pricing page on 2026-05-22 confirmed three tiers — Starter at $99, Growth at $399, Enterprise custom — with materially different model coverage at each tier than the third-party reviews had described. The pricing section was rewritten the same day; the revision is logged below. Going forward, pricing claims for this review are verified against the vendor pricing page directly on the verification date.

Funding figures were verified against Fortune's Series C coverage and cross-referenced with Profound's own announcement blog. Vendor entity, founders, product taxonomy, and customer disclosures are sourced from tryprofound.com and the Series C announcement. No Reddit discussion of Profound at meaningful volume was surfaced during research; practitioner discourse on the tool is concentrated on LinkedIn, agency operator blogs, and the G2 review base.

This review was scored against methodology version v0.1. The rubric is forthcoming at /methodology.

Revision history

  1. 2026-05-22Pricing fundamentally corrected against the live vendor pricing page. The first-published version cited Rankability and Arvow third-party reviews that described Profound as "Lite $499 per month, nine LLMs default." The vendor page (verified same day) shows three tiers — Starter $99 (ChatGPT only), Growth $399 (3 engines, bundled Agents), Enterprise custom (up to 10 engines) — with engine coverage that differs significantly from the third-party characterization. Verdict, Bottom Line, FactBlock, Pricing table, Do Not Buy conditions, FAQ, Comparison block, Alternatives, and Methodology sections all rewritten. Source [3] reassigned from the Rankability review to the vendor pricing page. SoftwareApplication Offer.price in JSON-LD updated from 499 to 99.
  2. 2026-05-22Agency pricing section added. Profound publishes a separate agency pricing model — Agency Growth $99/mo wrapper plus add-ons ($399/mo per Client Workspace, $199/mo for 5 Trial Workspaces) and Agency Enterprise custom. A five-client agency on Profound pays roughly $2,094/mo at this structure versus Peec Scale at €675/mo for up to seven clients flat — material difference for multi-client agency economics that the original review did not cover.
